Discovery Channel in Our Backyard

One afternoon last week we saw nature in action in our backyard. We've had a bunch of hawks flying overhead lately and on this day we saw him about to have lunch. I was a little sad for the squirrel, but then Julia reminded me, "It's nature, Mommy. It's part of the food chain." Well, there you have it.
Devin's class has been studying birds of prey so we thought it would be ok to take some pictures (nothing gory).

"Could be age..."

Well, after much deliberation, I think I have identified the terminator as a Broad-Tailed Hawk. However, Dad's been trying to help me in the identification process and almost EVERY other raptor that looks nothing like your bird could be it because "It could be age..." :) For what it's worth, I'm voting Broad Tailed Hawk. You won't get a more decisive answer than that here. :)

They seem to travel in packs since there are always a swarm of them over our neighborhood now. Poor Oreo. Thanks for the intel!!

I think these pics are so cool. but yes a little scary with them flying around. at least your rodent population will be smaller.
