Unified Sports

One of the very cool things about the kids' school is that it's one of two school in WH with children with special needs. Our school, because of the ramps and layout, has many children with physical challenges. Our children enjoy not only a multi-cultural environment in their school, but also a multi-capability one. It's fabulous that it's no big deal they they have a friends with a walker, wheel chair, hearing aids, voice box. This is very real world and I wish I'd been brought up in the same environment.

WH also pulls the many schools and other towns together with events with the label "Unified". Our school participates in the Unified Sports program. Once a month each of our kids leaves class and joins a group of kids that has chosen to be part of the Unified Sports program. Kids of varying abilities work together to learn soccer, football, baseball, basketball and other field sports.

At the end of the year we have an olympics type event at one of the high schools. All the kids from our town and neighboring towns in the Unified Sports program have a field day. They play sports all morning and then are rewarded with a medal.

Devin was old enough to participate last year and really enjoyed it. Julia was dying to be part of the US team and was thrilled to get her medal this year. Our kids got to spend the morning with their friends (shout out to the Cotter family) and had a blast!

that is great, good for them. now is the age that they have no prejudices so expose them to as many as possible.
